I've worked at 5 different startups in my career in Silicon Valley. While every company is unique, there are many similarities between Silicon Valley startups. As workplaces go, Silicon Valley startups embody the American dream they're exciting, fun, and provide employees with great flexibility and freedom. Join the right startup, and you can change the world! This book covers topics of interest to anyone who wants to work at startups

How do you get a job at a startup?
How do you choose which startups to talk to?
How do you approach interviewing at a startup?
How would you negotiate compensation?
Once at a startup, what should you do to maximize gains from stock options?
Why is it advantageous to exercise your stock options in certain conditions?
What do the clauses in your offer letter mean?
How do the clauses in your stock options contract affect you?
Drawing from my 17 years of experience at various pre-IPO companies in Silicon Valley, I provide answers to the above questions. Extensive examples, case studies, and detailed background are in the book.

After learning about the personal finance side of handling stock options, I joined Google less than a year before the IPO and discovered that what I had learned was hardly common knowledge. Despite explaining the details to several colleagues, many chose not to do the financially advantageous thing, leading to an increased tax liability of several hundred thousand dollars. This book was the result of observing these failures, and trying to prevent others from making the same mistakes.

What's different about this book?

Emphasis on the engineering non-founder. Most startup books are focused on the founder(s). For every founder at a successful company, there are hundreds of non-founders. This book is for everyone who is not a founder. I don't tell you how to raise money or read a term-sheet. That's the founder's job. Frequently, the founder's goals and your goals are different. For instance, when negotiating compensation, the employee and employer sit on opposite sides of the table.
Short and to the point. Pages are not wasted telling you how to write a resume. I show you how an engineering interviewer thinks. I did over 300 interviews for Google, and sat on a hiring committee for 3 years. Before that, I was an engineering manager for 3 different startups and also performed hundreds of interviews.
Covers the important tax planning topics that very few startups will tell you because of fear of lawsuits. Employers are not allowed to push their stock onto their employees.
Quotes and experience from well-known successful startup experts like Wayne Rosing (Google's first Senior VP of Engineering), Jeff Rothschild (VP of Technology at Facebook, Co-Founder of Veritas, Co-Founder of Mpath Interactive), and other startup veterans.
More importantly, you'll get to learn what other engineers think!

An Engineer Guide to Silicon Valley Startups eBook Piaw Na

This is a great book for anyone looking for get involved with start-ups, even if they're not in silicon valley, and even in non-coding roles. While it's not a long term job guide (and it's not intended to be), it is surprisingly comprehensive.

A good chunk of the book is focused on the financial / practical implication of start-ups (rather than, say, interview tips and such), which makes it a great read for even experienced people. Less experienced people will probably need some additional help finding a great position, but they'll still get a lot of value out of this book. After all, the financial side is some of the hardest for engineers (and anyone) to navigate.

Some of the topics covered:
EVALUATING STARTUPS
Piaw discusses a bunch of different "warning signs" for evaluating a start-up from the perspective of an engineer.

LANDING A JOB
Piaw offers good, concrete advice about maintaining and expanding your network, which is critical to finding a start-up that's a good fit.

HOW VC FUNDS WORK
More experienced people will probably basically know this information, but if you're someone who doesn't understand the ins and outs of VCs, you should read this.

EVALUATING YOUR CONTRACT
Piaw covers the major details in employee contracts, including non-competes and other tricky clauses.

TAX / STOCK IMPLICATIONS
I was really impressed by the level of depth here, and this is why I'd recommend this book to even more experienced people. It provides a great overview of different types of stock and then goes a good amount of detail about planning for different circumstance (evaluating stock packages, limiting your tax bill, etc).

If you're interested in understanding the "nitty gritty" details of joining a start-up, and learning about the more qualitative (aka "job guide") aspects as well, this will be a great book for you.

An Engineer Guide to Silicon Valley Startups eBook Piaw Na Reviews

I want to move to a startup after working at a big corporation for a while. I dint had much idea about startups and this book definitely helped me with few of the answers I was looking for. Its a pretty small book and only give and overview and author's personal experience working at different startups but definitely worth reading if you have never worked at a startup before.
Piaw is an Insider. Having worked at all the boiler plate Sillycone valley behemoths notable Google and having also spent considerable time at several early sage startups he is the Goto resource on how to navigate the maze that is the Silicon valley startups. The Book is well structured and reads like a novel, but is packed with tidbits, interview tips(I'm a Hardware guy and hence did not benifit from the interview A&A section) and how to negotiate an offer from a Pre Series-A all the way to a Mid size Pre-IPO startup. Highly recommend it to anybody looking to make that jump from a Corporate job to a early stage startup.
Piaw Na takes us inside the world of Silicon Valley startups, and gives solid, practical advice for locating and taking advantage of the opportunities in Silicon Valley. The book is based on his 17 years of experience at pre-IPO corporations in Silicon Valley. The information on negotiating stock options is worth the price of the book alone. Helpful information on venture capital, and what they are looking for when they invest. Reading this book could mean the difference between choosing a company that succeeds, and one that doesn't (hint some tool choices are a dead giveaway to poor engineering decisions, which is so true). Also gives a realistic view into the chances of hitting it big with stock options. Engineers interested in working in Silicon Valley, whether at a startup or not, should definitely read this book.
Are you working in a large company and not happy? Are you hoping that the constant change and fast pace pressure will "adjust" back to normal soon? Has this been going on for a few years? Maybe you are not made for big corporate...maybe a start-up is better for you. The first chapter of this book will help you figure out what type of company is better for your personality and needs. If you decide to move forward with the start-up route, the rest of the book is good info even if you don't live in the Silicon Valley and are not an engineer. I'm a marketer in the Biotech industry and I don't live/work in Northern California and I found this book very useful in making a career move to a small start up after over 6 years in a large and constantly growing larger company.
